Wanting What God Wants: Unlocking the Promise of Psalm 37:4

Of all the promises in Scripture, few are as cherished—and as misunderstood—as Psalm 37:4. It reads like a divine formula for happiness: “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

For many Christians, this verse becomes a spiritual vending machine. We do our part—we pray, we read our Bibles, we attend church—and then we wait for God to dispense our heart’s desires: the promotion, the spouse, the new house, the healing. When those things don’t materialize, we can be left feeling confused, disappointed, or even betrayed. We wonder, “Lord, I thought I was delighting in you. Why haven’t you kept your promise?”

The problem isn’t with God’s promise, but with our understanding of it. This verse is not about God fulfilling our every whim. It’s about a profound, supernatural transformation that occurs in the heart of a believer who truly finds their ultimate joy and satisfaction in God Himself. It’s about God not just giving you what you want, but changing the very “wanter” inside you until your desires miraculously align with His.

Let’s unpack this glorious truth and discover what it truly means to delight in the Lord and receive the desires He has for you.

The True Meaning of Delighting in the Lord

In a world saturated with fleeting pleasures and temporary highs, the concept of “delight” can seem shallow. We delight in a good meal, a beautiful sunset, or a new purchase. But the delight the Bible speaks of is of a different kind altogether. It’s not a fleeting emotion based on circumstances; it’s a deep, abiding joy rooted in the unchanging character of God.

The Hebrew word for “delight” in Psalm 37:4 is anag, which means to be soft or pliable, to find exquisite pleasure and joy in something. It paints a picture of a heart that is tender and responsive to God, a soul that finds its ultimate satisfaction in His presence. This isn’t just about feeling happy; it’s about being utterly captivated by who God is.

The Bible gives us a clear roadmap for understanding this kind of delight.

It’s a Delight in His Word

Where do we find this delight? How do we cultivate it? Psalm 1:2 provides the foundational answer: “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

The blessed man, the one who is truly prosperous in his soul, doesn’t see the Bible as a book of rules or a history text. He finds exquisite pleasure in it. He chews on it, meditates on it, and allows God’s truth to saturate his mind and heart. He loves God’s commands because he loves the God who gave them.

The Apostle Paul echoed this sentiment in the midst of his own spiritual battle in Romans 7:22: “For I delight in the law of God after the inward man.” Even while struggling with the flesh, Paul’s innermost being—his new nature in Christ—found joy and agreement with God’s standards.

To delight in the Lord is to delight in His self-revelation: the Holy Bible. It is to cherish His precepts, believe His promises, and tremble at His warnings. When you find yourself genuinely loving your time in the Word, you are on the path to delight.

It’s a Delight in His Nature

Isaiah the prophet adds another layer to our understanding. Speaking of the blessings of keeping the Sabbath, he says in Isaiah 58:14, “Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD…”

This links delight to obedience and worship. We delight in God not just for what He gives, but for who He is. We find joy in His holiness, His sovereignty, His mercy, and His justice. We are content simply to know Him, to be in His presence, and to worship Him for His matchless worth. Worldly delight is found in getting; spiritual delight is found in knowing God Himself.

This kind of delight is a choice before it is a feeling. It’s a conscious decision to seek our satisfaction in the Creator rather than the creation. It’s turning away from the cheap thrills of the world and finding our “exquisite pleasure” in the eternal God.

The Great Transformation: When Your Desires Become His

This brings us to the second half of the promise in Psalm 37:4: “…and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

This is where the magic happens, but it’s not the kind of magic we often imagine. The verse doesn’t promise that if you delight in God, He will then rubber-stamp your pre-existing wish list. The promise is far more profound. When you truly delight yourself in the Lord, He performs heart surgery. He begins to remove your old, selfish, worldly desires and replace them with new, holy, God-honoring desires.

He doesn’t just fulfill your desires; He gives you the desires. He plants them there. Your heart begins to beat in rhythm with His.

Think of it this way: A young child might desire to eat candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A loving father, delighting in his child, will not grant that desire because he knows it will lead to sickness and harm. Instead, the father works to cultivate in the child a desire for good, nourishing food that will make him strong and healthy. The father changes the child’s desires to align with what is truly best.

This is what our Heavenly Father does for us. As we find our joy in Him, our perspective shifts.

  • Instead of desiring worldly success, we begin to desire to be faithful.
  • Instead of desiring comfort and ease, we begin to desire to serve others.
  • Instead of desiring recognition from men, we begin to desire glory for God.
  • Instead of desiring our will to be done, we begin to desire, above all else, that His will be done in and through our lives.

Suddenly, you find yourself praying, “Lord, give me a heart for the lost,” or “Lord, help me to be more patient and kind,” or “Lord, use me for Your kingdom.” Where did those desires come from? They are the direct result of delighting in Him. He has given you the desires of His own heart. And when you pray for those things, you can be absolutely certain He will grant them.

Practical Steps to Cultivate a Life of Delight

Delighting in the Lord is not a mystical state reserved for a few spiritual giants. It is the intended daily walk for every blood-bought child of God. It requires discipline, intention, and a heart that is willing to be made soft and pliable. If you want to experience this reality, here are some practical places to start:

Prioritize His Word Daily. You cannot delight in a God you do not know. The primary way we know Him is through the King James Bible. Don’t just read it; meditate on it. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding and to make the words come alive in your heart. Treat it not as a duty, but as a meeting with the God who loves you.

Cultivate a Life of Prayer. Prayer is our direct line to the throne of grace. It’s where we pour out our hearts, but it’s also where we listen. “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) means maintaining a constant conversation with God. A life of prayer keeps our focus on Him, fostering a continual state of dependence and delight.

Practice Active Gratitude. A complaining spirit cannot coexist with a delighting heart. Make a daily habit of thanking God for who He is and what He has done. Thank Him for salvation, for His promises, for His provision, and even for the trials that shape you. Gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack to the abundance you have in Christ.

Serve Others Selflessly. When we obey Christ’s command to “love thy neighbour as thyself” (Mark 12:31), we step outside of our own selfish desires. Serving others—in your church, your community, or your own home—aligns your heart with the servant-heart of Jesus. Joy is a byproduct of a life poured out for God and for others.

Engage in Christian Fellowship. Don’t forsake “the assembling of ourselves together” (Hebrews 10:25). Surrounding yourself with other believers who are also seeking to delight in the Lord provides encouragement, accountability, and strength. We are sharpened and spurred on by one another in the faith.

The Most Fulfilling Desire

The world promises fulfillment but delivers emptiness. It tells you to follow your heart, but Jeremiah 17:9 warns that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

God offers a better way. Instead of telling you to follow your deceitful heart, He offers to give you a new one. He invites you into a relationship where your greatest pleasure is Him, your greatest passion is His glory, and your deepest desires are the very ones He has placed within you.

The promise of Psalm 37:4 is not a formula for getting what you want. It is a pathway to wanting what God wants. And there is no greater, more satisfying, or more joy-filled desire in the universe than to be in perfect alignment with the will of your loving Creator.

Stop chasing the fleeting desires of your old heart. Seek Him. Meditate on His Word. Worship His name. Delight yourself in the Lord, and watch as He performs the beautiful miracle of giving you the desires of His heart.
